Stands for ‘Sturmabteilung’ or ‘storm division’. The SA was the armed organisation of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP). It played an important role in the rise of the NSDAP in the 1920s when it was involved in street fights against political opponents. After the Nazis came to power, the SA became less important than the SS.
