In Peggau, north of Graz, there was a subcamp of the Mauthausen
concentration camp from August 1944 to early April 1945. The prisoners had
to build an underground arms factory for the company Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG.
More than 1,400 people were imprisoned in the camp.
