In 1945, there was a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp outside the village of Gunskirchen near Wels, Upper Austria. Shortly before the war ended, thousands of prisoners were housed in the supcamp in ust a few huts in the forest, under appalling hygenic conditions and without food. Many did not survive.
